Mary Elizabeth Ames

Mary Ames passed away peacefully on September 13, 2012 in San Mateo, CA. Mary was born on April 04, 1925 in Ancon, Panama Canal Zone to William and Mary Howard. She and Esthel “Sandy” Ames (Oct 08, 1922 – Jun 12, 2009), her husband of 63 years, started their married life in Seattle, WA and then Pittsburgh, PA before moving to Foster City, CA where they resided for over 40 years. Mary is survived by her sister Patricia Smith and brother-in-law Ray Smith of St. Petersburg, FL; Her adopted family – Herb Bridge of Seattle, WA, Ginger Dahlberg, Dianne and Bill Schwarz and Cary, Matt, Allie and Ryan Sweeney. Mary will be missed by her family, many friends and all those dear to her.
Upon graduation and after completing over 18 months with the Naval Supply Depot in Balboa, Canal Zone Mary left to attend college. Mary received her BA from the University of Washington and was on the Women’s Swimming and Softball teams. Watching sports was one of Mary’s favorite past-times and she could give you the highs and lows of almost every team in the Bay Area as well as individual swimmers, tennis players and golfers.
Mary’s work at West Coast Airlines, Airwest Airlines, Hughes Airwest Airlines, Republic Airlines and Northwest Airlines allowed her and Sandy to explore all the Continents. Mary was Past President of the SF Interline Club and enjoyed years of camaraderie with the Airport Secretaries Group. Mary and Sandy were avid travelers. They were able to see the world and never missed an opportunity to explore a new city or shop for unique souvenirs while on one of their many adventures.
To honor Mary we will be doing what she loved most – Going out to lunch. Please join us on Oct 07, 2012 at Luceti’s in San Mateo at 12:30pm for lunch and an opportunity to share our stories about Mary. Mary and Sandy’s ashes will be placed in their memorial plot at Skylawn in San Mateo on Oct 10 at 3:00pm.
