Joe Smith was with Pacific prior to the merger as Station Manager in Monterey. With the merger in 1968, Joe took the position as District Sales Manager in Reno before becoming Assistant Director of Sales.
Joseph Glen “Joe” Smith died Saturday at the age of 80. He spent the last 25 years enjoying the communities of West Marin, although he resided in Stockton the past two months. Joe was born in Bellingham, Washington to Harold G. and Katherine V. (Potter) Smith. The family, including his older sister Lee Smith Woods, lived in the states of Washington and California. Joe attended high school at St. John’s Military Academy, and received his B.A. from Whitman College. He served in the US Navy. Joe worked in the travel industry, including Airline Sales/Management and as Hotelier for South Pacific hotels, and raised his family in Washington, Nevada, and primarily California. He owned and operated a Bed & Breakfast. Joe has enjoyed volunteering, including with the Cordell Marine Sanctuary, Tomales Regional History Center, West Marin Senior Services, and the East Shore Planning Group. The Joe Smith family of four was named by the Social Security Administration as the “Typical American Family” in 1962. He was Pacific Air Lines Manager of the Year in 1967. Joe made an adventure out of life, and had many diverse interests including extensive world travel, geography, cultures, politics, beekeeping, bench-making, antiques, finance, cow horns, sea birds, and dominoes. He enjoyed the company of family and friends. Joe was known for his wit, charm, and easy smile.
Joe is survived by his daughter Becky Smith Gould (Nelson), son Hal Smith (Janet), grandson Nels Gould, and three nephews, Greg, Michael and Randy Woods, and two grand-nieces, Melissa and Leila. He remained friends with his former wife, Maxine Jacobsen.Joe is predeceased by his parents, sister Lee, and brother-in-law Len Woods.
