Jim Barbosa, 73, of Redding, passed away at home on December 21, 2013. Jim was born in 1940 in Gary, Indiana, to Alex and Anne Barbosa.
His family moved to Redding, California, in 1955. After graduating from Shasta High School in 1958 and Shasta College in 1960, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1961 to become a Marine aviator. He ended his Marine Corps career as a Captain in the Reserves flying A-4s out of Alameda, CA.
Jim worked as a commercial airline pilot beginning with Pacific Airlines in 1966. During the course of his 35-year career, Jim wore seven different uniforms, all with the same company due to many mergers and acquisitions. He retired in 1998 with Northwest Airlines as a DC-10 Captain based in Honolulu, Hawaii.
During his retirement he enjoyed shooting at the Redding Gun Club, fishing on his boat, hunting and flying up to Alaska to work on his “cabin” at Horseshoe Lake with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Marlys of Redding, his daughter Erica, son Alex and his wife Krista, all of Anchorage, Alaska. He also has one wonderful grandson, Nicholas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Anne Barbosa, his sister and brother-in-law Mary Lou and Jim Maloney and his sister-in-law, Avanel Pederson-Thulien.
A private gathering will be held in January. Donations may be made in his name to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund at semperfifund.org.
