Hughes, Hedy Anna Age 77, of Phoenix, Arizona died on April 30, 2015 at Banner University Medical Center. Born December 15, 1937 in Rome, New York, the daughter of the late Rosa and William T. Hughes of Rome, Hedy graduated in 1955 from Rome Free Academy and in 1959 from Rider University in Trenton, New Jersey. She was employed by Rome cable until 1960 when she moved to Seattle, Washington where she worked for a short time for The Boeing Company. In 1961 Hedy returned to Rome and started a career with the airlines, beginning with Mohawk Airlines in Utica, New York and in 1971 with Hughes Airwest in San Francisco, California. As the result of mergers, she transferred in 1981 to Republic Airlines of Minneapolis, Minnesota and in 1991 to Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis. She retired from Northwest in 1995 as the Manager of Customer Service in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1996 she began a second career in customer service with Matson Navigation Company, a division of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., in Phoenix, a position she retired from in 2001. Hedy is survived by a brother, William Hughes and his wife Joan, of New York; a niece, Lynn Hughes of Minnesota; nephews Scott Hughes and wife Meg, of New York, David Hughes of Arizona, and Joshua Hughes of New York; step-niece Joan Kahler of New York and great niece Ashley Hughes of Arizona. She also leaves several cousins. Hedy was predeceased by a brother, Herman Hughes. She was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Faith Community in Chandler, Arizona. There will be no calling hours. A memorial mass will be held at St. Andrew’s Church on Monday May 11, 2015 at 11:00 am. Interment will be in the Rome, New York Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society . Arrangements entrusted to Resthaven Park Mortuary, Phoenix, Arizona.
